IRELAND HANG ON FOR A POINT IN TIRANA
Albania 0-0 Republic of Ireland
Euro 2004 Qualifier, Group 10
The Republic of Ireland had keeper Shay Given to thank for keeping their Euro 2004 Qualification hopes alive as the Newcastle man pulled off a string of fine saves in the 0-0 draw in Albania.
Ireland had the ball in the back of the Albanian net with just seconds remaining through Gary Breen's header, but the goal was rightly ruled out for offside.
Despite the occasional break, Ireland were on the back foot throughout the contest, with Robbie Keane looking far from himself after missing the win in Georgia through a family bereavement.
The one crumb of comfort for the Irish is that they did at least pick up a point and with group leaders Switzerland also being held goalless in Georgia, qualification is still a distinct possiblity.
Ireland quickly learned that Albania are far from the whipping boys they once were - if the surprise win over Russia on Saturday had not already taught them that - as the hosts set up two early chances.
Klodian Duro crossed from the right and Murati - dubbed the Maradona of the Balkans by the home fans - peeled away from Breen at the back of the six-yard box. Murati looked certain to score, but Given bravely threw his frame in front of the shot and made a vital block, before Lee Carsley hooked clear.
Albania threatened down the right again in the 12th minute, and Given was alert to make another important save. Duro supplied the cross once more and as Altin Rraklli won the header he went
for accuracy rather than power, and Given dived to his right to make the catch.
Ireland's best chance of the half came when Damien Duff's powerful drive from the of the edge box was superbly parried away two-handed by Strakosha.
But Albania quickly regained the initiative. Stephen Carr committed a needless foul on Murati just outside the Irish box in the 24th minutes to concede a dangerous free-kick. Duro must have studied the goal Ireland conceded in Georgia as he whipped the ball in towards the near post, and Given again had to be on his toes as he punched the ball clear with both fists.
There was half a chance for Duff after 51 minutes as Keane did well just outside the Albania area before feeding his strike partner, but the ball got caught under the Blackburn man's feet on the edge of the six yard box and Strakosha cleared up.
Still the chances kept coming for Albania, notably after 57 minutes when Rraklli was allowed to run across the face of goal before trying to find Tare who just delayed his shot too long, giving Carr the chance to poke the ball wide of his own post.
And Given had to be alert right up to the end, reacting smartly to tip over a 20-yard drive from the dangerous Rraklli.
It all seems a long was from the glory days of the World Cup, but Ireland are starting to face up to the new realities. They are not the team they once were - and nor are the likes of Albania.
