What spawns the desire for man to make war? Is it in our genetic code? Thousands of years of civilization and advancements have not suppressed man’s killer instinct. Is it because we are all inherently hunters? Is it for the pure romanticism of standing besides a band of brothers that the government has issued to you together with other malfunctioning equipment? Or is it because men will never feel more alive than in the line of fire?
I have no fuc-king clue. I probably will never know. I missed the military boat by eight years. It sure as hell seems like a tempting boat with all the miseries and flaws to an outsider like me. “Jarhead” has been rated as an accurate account of the Marines life by Desert Storm veterans. I say that this movie (combined with a superb soundtrack – starring Kanye West) will do more to improve the soaring recruiting numbers than any other campaign used by the US military. After all, what direction-less teenage boy, wouldn’t want to burn buckets full of GI shit, and look at the world through the scope of a sniper rifle for a living?
This movie captures it all, and will have your heart pounding hard through one adrenaline charged scene to another. All feelings amplified: pain, sorrow, compassion, joy, anger, rage, and of course, love.
War couldn’t have been portrayed any better, as it’s never about politics. It’s not about Democrats or Republicans. It’s not about being pro or against Bush. It’s not about being an Iraqi, Afghani, or American soldier. It’s about the survival instinct, and relying on the man standing next to you to watch your back.
All men deep inside them, somewhere in the darkest part of their souls, are soldiers. And War is the metaphor for life played on fast-forward mode. While we all move through our daily battles, and life bullets, I want to take this moment to send a shout out to all the universal soldiers of this world. Watch this movie, and keep the fighting alive.
