GUILTY MAJOR WALKS FREE

Major Charles Ingram has escaped jail after being found guilty of cheating his way to the top prize on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?


He and his wife Diana escaped with 18 month suspended sentences and were fined £15,000 each and £10,000 costs.

Accomplice Tecwen Whittock was given a 12 month prison sentence which was suspended for two years. He was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £7,500.

Disgraced Ingram, 39, tricked game show host Chris Tarrant into signing the £1m cheque after using an Whittock's coded coughs to help select the answers.

Scam

Diana Ingram, also 39, was found guilty of helping to "set up" the scam.

The Ingrams, from Wiltshire, and Whittock, of Cardiff, were each found guilty of one count of "procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception" on September 10, 2001.

The verdicts came after Judge Geoffrey Rivlin QC told the eight women and three men of the jury he would accept majority decisions.

Scooped

Ingram, a father of three, scooped the top prize on the game show hosted by Mr Tarrant.

But just hours after walking away with the cheque, studio chiefs became suspicious of his success.

They thought a system of coughs, heard to come from the direction of Whittock, a contestant in the "fastest finger first" seats, was signalling the correct answers.

Nicholas Hilliard, prosecuting, told the jury that it was only by "cheating his way" through the 15 questions he was asked that Ingram was able to win the fortune.

In a statement released after the case, presenter Chris Tarrant said: "This was a very cynical plan, motivated by sheer greed.

'Insulting'

"It is hugely insulting to the hundreds and hundreds of other contestants who have come on the show, just hoping for much smaller amounts of money but prepared to try and win their money honestly."

As the three were allowed to remain seated in the dock, Judge Geoffrey Rivlin, QC, told them: "I am not at all sure that it was sheer greed that motivated this offence.

"I am sure all three of you were besotted with quiz programmes and the ambition to be successful on a major television show.

"It was this that caused you Charles and Diana Ingram to wonder whether you could beat and, it has to be said, cheat the system, an idea that so intrigued you you were overcome by it.

'Shabby'

"You Tecwen Whittock were only too prepared to go along with it.

"As to the shabby schoolboy trick you two men ultimately played, you certainly had no notion it would result in you Charles Ingram going on to win £1m.

"But somehow, more by good luck than good management, it did and a cheque in that sum was handed over.

"Of course you were prepared to accept what has been described as that `life changing' sum of money and enjoy it," said the judge.

But, he told them, it was clear from the evidence their joy was "short-lived."

"For after the programme your win quickly turned sour when you realised you had gone too far."
