Powell pranon gabimin

Occupation soldiers kill protesters in Iraq

Sunday 04 April 2004,

Al-Sadr's supporters promised massive rallies on Sunday

Spanish occupation soldiers have shot dead three Iraqi demonstrators and wounded dozens others in protests supporting Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

A hospital official in the southern city of Najaf confirmed the toll on Sunday.

"The toll will probably rise because more injured are being brought in," said Dr Muhammad Husayn al-Husayni of Najaf's al-Sadrin hospital.

Thousands of al-Sadr's supporters were heading towards the headquarters of the Spanish-led Plus Ultra Brigade on the outskirts of the holy city, reported witnesses.

There were at least five people lying wounded on the ground,
amid the sound of explosions and gunfire, reported an AFP correspondent said.

Ambulances rushed to the scene.

The Sadr supporters had been marching from Najaf to the
neighbouring shrine town of Kufa, passing the Plus Ultra base on their way.

Pro-al-Sadr demonstrations also erupted on Sunday around Baghdad and in the southern port city of Basra.

Members of the Mahdi Army
parade in al-Sadr city

There have been daily protests for the past week over the occupation's suspension of the al-Hawza newspaper, a pro-al-Sadr publication which the US occupation authorities said was inciting violence.

Mosques linked to al-Sadr had earlier called for a general strike. Al-Sadr is a fierce opponent to the occupation and US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council. His support is mainly among impoverished Iraqis living in al-Sadr City in Baghdad, formerly known as Saddam City.

Green Zone

US occupation authorities had feared the protests could turn violent and announced they were shutting the entrances to their sprawling headquarters, better known as the Green Zone from 5 am to 12 pm.

"With the concurrence of Ambassador Bremer, travel outside the Green Zone from 0500 - 1200 hrs on Sunday 4 April 04 will be prohibited due to large demonstrations at ALL Green Zone check points," the advisory read.

"These demonstrations have a very high probability of turning violent."

Bearing out the occupation's worries, Shia mosques around Baghdad called for al-Sadr's followers to turn out in force on Sunday.

US occupation soldiers are on
high alert in Baghdad

"Loyal people of Iraq, in protest of the detention of religious clerics by the occupation forces, the decision has been taken to general strike at all government institutions and schools, so we call on you to answer this call," the loudspeakers blared from mosques.

"Mahdi army members should immediately head to Mosque Muhsin al-Hakim in Sadr City," in reference to militiamen in support of al-Sadr.

Mosque attacked

Meanwhile, a bomb exploded outside a small mosque in the town of Baquba, north of Baghdad, early on Sunday, destroying most of the building and wounding at least one person, witnesses said.

A Reuters television cameraman at the scene said al-Rasul al-Adham mosque, predominantly attended by Shia Muslims, had collapsed from the force of the explosion, which went off after morning prayers when the building was mostly empty.

It is not the first time a mosque has been attacked in the town.

In January, five people were killed and more than 30 wounded when a bomb exploded outside another Shia-dominated mosque in the centre of Baquba as Friday prayers were ending.

The town, which lies about 65km north of Baghdad, is inhabited by Sunni and Shia Muslims and has seen regular unrest over the past year, with fighters opposing occupation, attacking US forces and Iraqi police.

US Marines killed

In related news, two US Marines were killed in separate attacks west of Baghdad, the US military said in a statement on Sunday.

The army said one Marine was killed in action on Saturday and the other died on Sunday from wounds received in a separate engagement on Saturday.

The military declined to give any further information on the incidents, citing security reasons.

The area west of Baghdad, including the town of Falluja, is a hotbed of anti-occupation activity. Earlier this week, four US contractors driving through the town were killed and their corpses burnt and dragged through the streets by a crowd.

The same day, five US soldiers were killed in the same area when a roadside bomb detonated under their armoured vehicle.

Defiant al-Sadr vows uprising will continue

Tuesday 06 April 2004,

Al-Sadr supporters remain firm on their demands

The revolt by supporters of Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr will continue until occupying troops are withdrawn from populated areas and prisoners are released.

"The uprising will continue and we will not negotiate unless they fulfil our demands, which are a withdrawal from populated areas and the release of prisoners," al-Sadr aide Qays al-Ghazali said on Tuesday.

He also read a statement from the Shia cleric denouncing President George Bush and the US-led occupation.

"This insurrection shows that the Iraqi people are not satisfied with the occupation and they will not accept oppression," the statement said.

Al-Sadr said he called on countries with forces in Iraq to withdraw their soldiers.

"I direct my words to the great evil, Bush, and I ask who is against democracy? Is it the one who is advocating peaceful resistance or the one who is bombing the nation and shedding blood?" he said.

The statement said al-Sadr had decided to end a sit-in at the main mosque in Kufa, near Najaf, because he feared that the mosque would be raided and defiled by occupation troops.

Several killed

So far 66 Iraqis and seven US soldiers have been killed in fighting between followers of al-Sadr and occupation forces across the country.

Muqtada al-Sadr has asked
occupation troops to withdraw

Of this, 39 Iraqis died and 126 were wounded in al-Sadr City, a Baghdad suburb, in the past two days, a spokesman for al-Thawra hospital said on Tuesday.

Fierce clashes re-erupted in this stronghold of al-Sadr followers after US helicopters and tanks bombed the densely populated neighbourhood, according to Aljazeera's correspondent Aktham Sulayman.

US forces occupied all police stations in al-Sadr City. Tanks and armoured Humvees stood guard in front of the stations across the impoverished district which is home to more than two million people. Heavily armed soldiers were posted on the rooftops.

"I direct my words to the great evil, Bush, and I ask who is against democracy? Is it the one who is advocating peaceful resistance or the one who is bombing the nation and shedding blood?"

Muqtada al-Sadr
Shia leader

On Monday, US helicopters attacked an al-Sadr office in Baghdad, leaving five Iraqis dead.

Fighting between occupation soldiers and members of al-Sadr's militia, al-Mahdi Army, erupted on Sunday when Spanish forces killed at least 20 demonstrators in the city of Najaf who were demanding the release of al-Sadr aide, Mustafa Yaqubi.

Three US soldiers were killed in separate incidents on Monday and Tuesday around Baghdad and four US marines died in al-Anbar province west of the capital, said the military on Tuesday.

The soldiers died in the mainly Shia district of al-Kadhimiya.

Fighting spreads

In the southern town of Nasiriya, 15 Iraqi civilians and occupation troops, including one Ukranian soldier were killed in clashes.

Al-Mahdi Army has no support
from other Shia factions

Twelve Italian troops were injured, though none seriously.

Militiamen were still controlling the streets in the area, near the local headquarters of the occupation authorities.

Also in the southern town of Amara, 12 Iraqis have died during clashes with British occupation soldiers, according to medical sources there.

Karbala

In Karbala, also in the south, al-Sadr's supporters seized control over a district, including a police station, reported Aljazeera's correspondent.

Al-Sistani is said to be supporting
appeal for fighting to be renounced

Al-Sadr has turned down an appeal by Iraq's Shia establishment to renounce fighting.

An aide to Muhammad Bahr al-Ulum, a member of the US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council, said Iraq's leading Shia cleric Ayat Allah Ali al-Sistani, supported the appeal.

Al-Sistani, an Iranian-born cleric, has ordered Iraq's Shia not to take up arms against the occupation. He has not spoken directly on the violence involving al-Sadr's supporters, but he is expected to make a statement in the next few days.

"The Hawza is unanimous on this," said the aide, referring to the main centre of Shia instruction in the southern city of Najaf.

Arrest warrant

Al-Sadr has refused to meet a tribal delegation and representatives of Bahr al-Ulum at the main mosque of Kufa, near the holy city of Najaf.

Occupation troops in tanks have
bombed Iraqi neighbourhoods

US occupation authorities said on Monday an arrest warrant had been issued for al-Sadr in connection with the murder of a fellow Shia cleric a year ago.

Al-Sadr has denied involvement in the death of Sayyid Abd al-Majid al-Khoei, seen as a pro-Western cleric.

Hamid al-Bayati, spokesman for the Shia Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), criticised the announcement of the arrest warrant against al-Sadr.

Bad timing

"The incident took place a year ago and I don't think any Iraqi would believe that this arrest warrant is at the right time," he told CNN. "It is very bad timing, even if the basis is right. I don't know why they decided to act now.

Following Sunday's Najaf killings, al-Sadr's office issued a statement calling on supporters to end protests and instead take up arms against occupation forces.

However, al-Sadr is relatively junior in the Shia hierarchy.

He is the son of Grand Ayat Allah Muhammad Sadiq al-Sadr, a prominent Iraqi Shia leader who was killed in 1999 along with two of his other sons.

Re: IRAQ

Dozen marines killed, Iraqi toll mounting

Wednesday 07 April 2004,

Al-Sadr supporters have taken to the streets for the third day

More Iraqi civilians have been killed and a dozen marines have died as clashes rage on between occupation forces, Sunni resistance and supporters of Muqtada al-Sadr in at least eight towns and cities.

In Ramadi, a centre of anti-occupation activities, a dozen US marines died when resistance fighters attacked their position near the governor's palace late on Tuesday. It was the deadliest single strike against occupation forces since the start of the war.

The White House quickly declared that the raid would not oust forces from Iraq. US officials said there were "significant losses" to resistance fighters, but gave no further details.

Another four Iraqis died overnight in fresh clashes between occupation soldiers and al-Sadr loyalists in al-Sadr City, a strongold of the Shia leader in a Baghdad suburb. Another three Iraqi civilians died of injuries sustained in earlier fighting.

In the southern city of Karbala, five Iranians and three Iraqi civilians were killed when occupation soldiers opened fire on their vehicle near a checkpoint.

Bloody days

Since clashes erupted between occupation forces and al-Sadr loyalists on Sunday, US forces have suffered at least 19 casualties. A Salvadoran and Ukrainian soldier have also died.

More than 100 Iraqis have been killed and scores wounded by occupation fire since fighting broke out in the southern city of Najaf, before sweeping to seven other cities and towns including Falluja, Ramadi, Nasiriya, Amara, Baghdad and Karbala.

Kut was the latest southern city to be gripped by battles as al-Sadr militiamen clashed with Ukrainian forces.

It is the first time since the US-led war that some Shia factions have taken up arms against occupation troops.

Al-Sadr ordered his loyalists to join the resistance after Spanish forces opened fire on demonstrators in Najaf, killing at least 20 Iraqis and wounding scores.

Protesters had been calling for the release of al-Sadr aide, Mustafa al-Yacubi, detained by occupation forces last weekend. They were also protesting the closure by occupation authorities of a pro-al-Sadr newspaper, al-Hawza.

More resistance?

Until Sunday, Shia leaders have ordered followers to cooperate with the occupation and "resist peacefully". Iraq's leading Shia cleric Iranian-born Grand Ayat Allah Ali al-Sistani has ordered followers not to take up arms.

There seems to be no let up to
the suffering of Iraqis

However, al-Sadr lacks religious education and credibility and bases his religious authority on his lineage.

He is the son of Grand Ayat Allah Muhammad Sadiq al-Sadr, a prominent Iraqi Shia leader who was killed in 1999 along with two of his other sons.

His followers will continue to battle occupation forces until troops withdraw from populated areas and prisoners are released, said an al-Sadr aide on Tuesday.

"This insurrection shows that the Iraqi people are not satisfied with the occupation and they will not accept oppression," according to a statement from al-Sadr's office.

Al-Sadr decided to end a sit-in at the main mosque in Kufa, near Najaf, because he feared that the mosque would be raided and defiled by occupation troops.

Aljazeera learned he had secluded himself in the Imam Ali mosque in Najaf.

Re: IRAQ

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two U.S. soldiers and an unknown number of civilian contractors are unaccounted for after a fuel convoy was attacked Friday near Baghdad International Airport, a senior Pentagon official says.

Another 13th Corps Support Command soldier and an Iraqi driver were killed in the incident, and 12 people were wounded.

The contractors' nationality was not immediately known.

The official said "unaccounted for" means that U.S. troops are looking for the soldiers and contractors. The senior Pentagon official said a search is under way.

The four-truck convoy was hit with small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades and exploded into flames, the official said.

Meanwhile Friday, in the Sunni stronghold of Fallujah, where the insurgency has been most fierce, the U.S.-led coalition halted its offensive to allow Iraqis to bury the dead and aid supplies to be brought in.

Iraqi Governing Council members also met with Fallujah leaders and leadership of the anticoalition forces to try to bring calm.

U.S. Marines were allowing only women and children to leave the city, while allowing humanitarian supplies, such as food and medical supplies, to enter.

But even as the offensive was paused, sporadic fighting continued that left at least one Marine dead.

Los Angeles Times reporter Tony Perry told CNN he saw insurgents attack a Red Crescent aid convoy.

Another time, the 1st Marine Division said at least 16 insurgents opened fire on Marines and retreated to a cave.

An AC-130 gunship was called in to attack the cave, and two 500-pound, laser-guided bombs were dropped on it.

"We will fight the enemy on our terms. May God help them when we're done with them," said Maj. Gen. James Mattis, the commanding general of the 1st Marine Division.

Earlier in the day, Gen. John Abizaid, the commander of coalition forces in Iraq, said the cessation in Fallujah was a halt only in the offensive there in recent days, not a halt in all military action.

"We certainly will take whatever military action we need to defend ourselves and to prevent the enemy from taking advantage there," said Abizaid, who visited Fallujah.

He also said he was not surprised by the resistance in Fallujah, which had been the military and special intelligence center for the former Iraqi regime.

Fallujah also is the city where four American contractors were killed last week, their bodies mutilated and dragged through the streets.

Massoud Barzani, president of the Iraqi Governing Council, urged Fallujah residents "to cooperate and expose the terrorists who committed the heinous killing and mutilation of bodies and surrendering them to face justice."

The resistance movement has swept through parts of Iraq during the past week after the coalition sought the arrest of the firebrand, anticoalition Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, and shut down his newspaper.

Since the start of April, at least 51 coalition troops -- nearly all of them Americans -- have been killed, marking one of the bloodiest stretches of the war since the fall of Baghdad. To date, 753 coalition forces, including 650 U.S. troops, have died in the war.
