<font color="red"> Faculty of Geosciences
On the first of September 2003 the faculty of Geosciences was founded as a collaboration of the faculties of Earth Sciences and Geographical Sciences. The faculty offers a wide spectrum of education and research concerning the geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and antroposphere. The faculty enjoys international acclaim, both proven by our many graduates who have achieved important positions at leading foreign universities and the large number of visiting scientists. In the Netherlands, the faculty is the largest institute in the field of Geosciences. We teach approximately 2000 students in five Bachelor and 19 Master programmes.

PhD Researcher Hydrogeochemistry (1,0 fte)

Job description

The Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University invites applications for a PhD – position in hydrogeochemistry within the project:

Coupled biogeochemical dynamics of nitrogen sulfur in aquifer systems and implications for groundwater quality threatened by agricultural nitrogen pollution

Nitrate contamination due to agricultural activity represents a worldwide threat to groundwater resources. Denitrification is the major pathway of removal of nitrate from groundwater systems. In this project, an integrated combination of experimental, field and local/regional reactive transport modeling will be used to elucidate the key factors controlling the rate of denitrification and to determine the impact of denitrification coupled to pyrite oxidation on local and regional groundwater quality at two locations in the Netherlands.

This project is funded by the Water Progr amme of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and will be carried out within the Department of Earth Sciences – Geochemistry in cooperation with the Netherlands Institute of Applied Geoscience TNO - National Geological Survey (TNO-NITG).

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with an interest in mathematical modeling and a MSc degree in (bio)geochemistry, hydrogeology, environmental sciences or a related field.

Terms of employment

We offer a full-time PhD position for 4 years, with monthly salary starting at € 1877,- in the first year to € 2407,- in the last year of appointment. <font color="blue"> Faculty of Veterinary Medicine
The Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) is an interfacultary research institute from the Faculties Veterinary Medicine and Medicine, and the departments Biology and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Science Faculty at the Utrecht University. The mission of IRAS is to provide research and education on human health risks of exposure to potentially harmful agents in the environment, at the workplace and through the food chain. IRAS has three research divisions. The Environmental and Occupational Health division performs epidemiological research on respiratory, cardiovascular and carcinogenic health risks in relation to biological and chemical exposures. Within the Public Health and Food Safety division research is conducted to identify and study possible adverse health effects from microbial and non-microbial agents occurring in food derived from the animal production process. Research within the Toxicology division covers the part of the risk assessment in which the availability and dose – adverse health effect relationships of toxic substances are studied. The aim of IRAS is to perform quality research with a high relevance for society. The IRAS offers an enthusiastic and dynamic working environment for young scientists and has a vacant PhD position.

You will be working on the project “Role of mast cells in the impairment of the intestinal barrier” at the work unit Cellular and Molecular Toxicology. This research group investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms of action of toxic (food-related products, health products, drugs and environmental contaminants) and endogenous substances on the neural and endocrine system. This project will be carried out in close collaboration with the work unit Immunotoxicology and with the Mucosal Barrier Stud y Group of the Dept. of Surgery of the University Medical Centre Utrecht.

PhD-researcher Role of mast cells in the impairment of the intestinal barrier (1,0 fte)

Job description

You will investigate the role of mucosal mast cells in the neuro-immune process that leads to impairment of the intestinal mucosal barrier during pathological conditions, such as acute pancreatitis, inflammation or food allergies. You will apply the most promising methods to study the bi-directional interactions between the nervous system and the immune system in the intestinal wall. In a well tested mouse model of acute pancreatitis, y ou will measure the functional damage to the mucosal barrier and relate this to immunohistochemically determined alterations in (sub)cellular morphology of the barrier. You will apply electrophysiological and Ca2+ recording techniques on cultured mucosal mast cells and use selected neuropeptides to investigate the process of activation of mast cells as well as the subsequent degranulation. You will present your findings at national and international meetings and conferences, and publish the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and your PhD thesis. You will supervise MSc students during their internships and follow training courses relevant for your research.

Qualifications

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a MSc degree in the field of life and/or biomedical sciences with a strong interest in neuroimmunolog y and toxicology. You are willing to learn new techniques and you have good communication and writing skills, especially in English. Experience with electrophysiology or Ca2+-imaging at the cellular level would be an advantage, but is not necessary.

Terms of employment
