Spanish director Eloy de la Iglesia and Albanian actor Dritan Biba discuss bathhouses, boys and Bulgarian Lovers by Lawrence Ferber
Before Spanish filmmakers Pedro Almodóvar and Ventura Pons shot their first inch of celluloid, Eloy de la Iglesia retained the title of Spain’s openly gay enfant terrible of cinema. Throughout the 1970s and ’80s, he brought controversial queer tales of terror, political scandal, sexually tortured priests and sleazy teens to the screen. Yet the bad boy himself “disappeared” in 1987 when he struggled with heroin addiction while his young boyfriend/muse, José Luis Manzano, died from an overdose. Today, Iglesia is back. Though sober and not quite an “enfant,” he’s still pretty darned bad. Adapted from a novel by Eduardo Mendicutti, Bulgarian Lovers returns the director to his favorite themes. Spanish star Fernando Guillen Cuervo plays Daniel, a middle-aged man fond of young foreigners. A 23-year-old Bulgarian, Kyril (hunky newcomer Dritan Biba), is his latest affair, and possibly the most dangerous. At Iglesia’s side today (often translating his Spanish) is Biba, who betrays none of the attitude but all of the smoldering sexual charisma of his character.
Eloy, you’ve had relationships like the ones in your films?
Eloy de la Iglesia Yes, relationships between people with an age difference, but I’ve always tried not to buy [via hustlers] this kind of relationship. About Bulgarian Lovers, I identified with the loneliness of the [Daniel] character. Unfortunately, the author of the book actually had that relationship!
Dritan, you moved to Madrid - why?
Dritan Biba I wanted to convince myself that I’m not inferior to the rest of the world. In the area I come from - Albania - we have that complex about feeling inferior after the fall of communism.
It’s not always clear if Kyril is gay or just putting out for cash. What’s your opinion?
DB When I was 13 or 14, there were a few guys having sex, experimenting with older men. They weren’t gay. Their attitude was, “I’m so macho that I can have sex with a man!” That’s Kyril’s attitude. Kyril does really love Daniel, but not in a sexual way.
EI He’s innocent. All the characters are perverts, but above all they’re not guilty, not responsible for the situation [society has put them in].
Daniel and his friends spend a lot of time at the bathhouse; do you?
EI Yes, but in the movie the sauna is fake because in Spain, Jacuzzis are forbidden in gay saunas because of health issues. I have been visiting the saunas in San Franciso and New York, and people are themselves in those places.
Did you consider hitting on Dritan?
EI [Blushes] He wasn’t physically my type! But he’s got a younger brother, so he should introduce me…
DB He lives in Albania, so…
Dritan, we see lots of hot sex scenes with you naked. How did shooting those go?
DB Fernando and Eloy really made me feel comfortable all the time, although there were also 10 guys around looking at me naked! Three weeks before, I was telling myself, “Okay, no big deal! Everyone has got an *** , everyone gets naked sometimes. There are people who go to nude beaches, right?”
Eloy, what’s next?
EI A story about young boys, rough stuff. I would like to explore where the violence comes from.
DB He would like to make another film with me, even though I won’t introduce him to my brother. But I can introduce him to a cousin!
