Mid 19th century; Persian, Qajar Dynasty; Papier-mâché; 20 x 13.2 cm (7 7/8 x 5 1/4 in.); Founders Society Purchase with funds from Mrs. Charles C. Andrews; 1991.5

The Safavid 17th-century tradition for luxury objects in painted lacquer was continued under the Persian Qajars. This technique, employing an undercoat of gesso and a lacquer varnish, produced richly decorated pieces of great charm. This mirror case depicts a nightingale on a rosebush amid hyacinths, primroses, and other blossoms. As in Persian poetry, the bird symbolizes the lover, while the rose his beloved. A Persian sensibility is here integrated with an interest in European botanical studies.

Woman with a Mirror
1619; Riza-i 'Abbasi (Persian, active 1587-1635); Safavid Dynasty; Opaque watercolor on paper; 24.1 x 12 cm (9 1/2 x 4 3/4 in.); Gift of Mrs. Edsel B. Ford; 44.274

When the Safavid ruler Shah 'Abbas I (1587-1629) moved the capital of Persia to Isfahan in 1589, Riza-i 'Abbasi was his most influential court painter. Riza created a style which relied on a calligraphic line and an original sense of color. His album pages reflect the shah's and the public's taste for intimate works. They mirror the luxurious taste of the Safavid court with its fondness for elaborate textiles, Chinese porcelain, and exotic garments.

It is said that even the great Shah 'Abbas was so overcome by the beauty of a portrait by Riza that he bowed and kissed the hand of his court painter.

Qur'an Manuscript
ca. 1425-50; Persian, Timurid Dynasty; Opaque watercolor, ink, and gold on paper; 44.5 x 38.1 cm (17 1/2 x 15 in.); City of Detroit Purchase; 30.323

The Timurids ruled most of Iran and Central Asia for much of the 15th century. As patrons of the arts they established kitabkhanas (royal library-workshops) in Samarkand and Herat producing luxurious Qur'ans (the holy book of Islam) as declarations of their piety. These Qur'ans, of imposing size, were written in a variety of monumental cursive scripts and illuminated with a rich repetoire of ornamental motifs. This delicacy and intricacy of expression achieved by the royal Timurid style dazzles the eye on this sumptuous object
