The F-16 Falcon is one of the world's most important and versatile warplanes. Designed as a light weight fighter, the key element is a very high power/weight ratio, producing good performance. The F-4 was one of the finest warplanes ever designed, and was built in larger numbers than any other plane since World War II. The Phantom was initially conceived as a carrierborne attack warplane, but soon transformed into a multi-role fighter for land-based as well as carrier use. The F-4 was also built in Japan by Mitsubishi; and Germany and Israel have both upgraded their F-4's for fiercer attack roles. A 20 mm cannon was only standard on the F-4E; when a cannon was required, a external pod was mounted on the centerline store racks
