Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird

sr71_1.jpg

Origin: USA Type: Reconnaissance Crew: 2
Max Speed: 2,250 mph (Mach 3.4) Ceiling: 100,000 ft Year: 1966

The famous SR-71 Blackbird, a mach 3.5+ spy plane, is the fastest aircraft ever known to be in service with an air force. The Blackbird, which is used for long distance surveillance, has been in and out of storage many times. The large, delta-winged SR-71 gets its performance from the unusual J-58 engines, that act at as ramjets at high altitude and speed. The outer shell of the Blackbird is made of titanium, which expands under the extremely high temperatures of flight. Because of this, the fuel tanks are made so that they will leak until airborne and then expand until they are completely sealed. By the time the Blackbird is in the air, nearly all of its fuel is gone; and it must refuel in mid-air with a nearby tanker.

Lockheed-Martin F-117 Nighthawk

f117_1.jpg

Origin: USA Type: Stealth attack fighter Crew: 1
Max Speed: 1,040 km/h (646 mph) Mission radius: 1,056km (656 miles)

"Popularly referred to as the "Stealth Fighter," the F-117A Nighthawk is a precision attack aircraft designed to be 'invisible' to radar. Constructed primarily of aluminum, the F-117A's fuselage comprises flat panels known as facets mounted on the aircraft's subframe, their purpose being to reflect radar energy away from the transmitter itself, thus denying the operators a visible 'return'. All surfaces are coated with various radar absorbent materials. All doors and panels have serrated edges to further minimize radar reflection. Grid covers on the intakes and the use of narrow-slot 'platypus' exhausts surrounded by heat-absorbing tiles further reduce the chances of IR detection.

Ahead of the flat-plate five-piece cockpit glazing is a FLIR sensor, recessed in a mesh-covered housing; in the forward starboard underfuselage there is a retractable DLIR and laser designator. These sensors are used in conjunction with LGBs, two of which can be carried in the double-section weapons bay. Alternatively, AAMs can be carried. That the weapons load is relatively modest is a testimony to the faith put in the low-observable technology - a faith borne out by the fact that 42 F-117As flew just 2% of the combat sorties mounted during the Gulf War, yet accounted for some 40% of the strategic targets attacked in Iraq."

OH58D KIOWA WARRIOR
oh58d.jpg

The OH-58D Kiowa Warrior is a two-pilot, single engine armed reconnaissance helicopter. The major noticeable difference between the Kiowa Warrior and its predecessor, the OH-58D Army Helicopter Improvement Program is a universal weapons pylon on both sides of the aircraft capable of accepting combinations of the air-to-ground HELLFIRE and air-to-air Stinger missiles, 2.75" folding fin aerial rocket pods, and a 0.50 caliber machine gun. In addition to these weapons, the Kiowa Warrior upgrade includes changes designed to provide improvements in air-to-air and air-to-ground communications; mission planning and management; power, survivability, and night pilotage; and also reductions in crew workload through the use of on-board automation and cockpit integration.

Grumman A-6E Intruder

a6_1.jpg

Origin: USA Type: Shipboard attack bomber Crew: 2
Max speed: 1,037 km/h (644 mph) Ceiling: 12,925m (42,400 ft)

"The Korean War highlighted the US Navy/Marine Corps' need for a new all-weather long-range carrier-borne attack aircraft capable of operating by day or night. A subsequent competition was won in 1957 by Grumman, the first of six TA2F-1 prototypes flying for the first time on 19 April 1960. These were followed by 482 production A-6As delivered to the US Navy from early 1963. They played a major role in the Vietnam war, flying some 35,000 sorties by 1973. An unarmed variant, the KA-6D, was developed as the US Navy's principal carrier-based tanker.

The A-6E is typical of the whole A-6 family, with long-span wings, almost full-span flaps and distinctive wing-tip split airbrakes. The bulbous nose radome remains, but now it houses a single AN/APQ-148 multi-mode radar capable of track-while-scan and ground-mapping terrain-avoidance. Beneath the radome is a stabilized chin turret containing IIR, laser spot tracker and laser ranger/designator. A proposed A-6F would have featured a new airframe and F404 powerplants but it was rejected in favor of the A-12 Avenger II. Cancellation of the latter in 1991 has resulted in further upgrading of the surviving A-6Es, but a rewinging program was abandoned, and the remaining A-6Es are now due to be retired by the end of the century."

Grumman F-14 Tomcat
f14_3.jpg

Origin: USA Type: Fighter Crew: 2
Max Speed: 1,241 mph Ceiling: 53,000 ft

The F-14 Tomcat is a large and powerful two-seat shipboard fighter with variable geometry wings. These wings swing back while cruising for long durations and swing forward to sustain greater maneuverability in combat situations. The weapons system and the Phoenix missile armament are unrivalled for long-distance interceptions, making the F-14 one of the most effective heavy fighters. The F-14 is also expensive and very maintenance intensive.

Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit

b2_1.jpg

Origin: USA Type: strategic bomber Crew: 2
Max speed: 764 km/h (475 mph) Ceiling: 15,240m (50,000 ft)

"Revealed on 22 November 1988, the B-2A Spirit low-observable (stealth) strategic bomber is the result of a program begun in 1978. The first of six prototypes made its maiden flight on 17 July 1989. One operational USAF unit, the 509th BW, operates the Spirit, the first example for operational use having been delivered in 1993. The B-2A is a blended flying wing with a straight leading-edges and a 'sawtooth' trailing-edge."

"A centerbody smoothly contoured into the upper wing surfaces contains the two-man crew compartment and two weapons bays, while the all-important contouring extends to the engine bays. The exhausts for the engines are deliberately positioned well forward of the wing trailing-edge, this to help reduce the heat signature. Future B-2s are scheduled to have fully automated mission planning, a sat/nav communications system, a GPS aided targeting system and RWR & TFR."

Max Speed:1,320 mph (Mach 2) Ceiling: 50,000 ft Year: 1974

The F-16 Falcon is one of the world's most important and versatile warplanes. Designed as a light weight fighter, the key element is a very high power/weight ratio, producing good performance. Also adding to performance is the fly-by-wire control system, which provides maximum agility and stability. To add in the pilot's comfort, the F-16 is designed with a semi-reclining seat under a clear-view canopy. Production of the F-16 is scheduled to end later in the decade, though further models will surely emerge.

McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom
f4_1.jpg

Origin: USA Type: Fighter Crew: 2
Max Speed: 1,430 mph (Mach 2.17) Ceiling: 58,750 ft Year: 1967

The F-4 was one of the finest warplanes ever designed, and was built in larger numbers than any other plane since World War II. The Phantom was initially conceived as a carrierborne attack warplane, but soon transformed into a multi-role fighter for land-based as well as carrier use. The F-4 was also built in Japan by Mitsubishi; and Germany and Israel have both upgraded their F-4's for fiercer attack roles. A 20 mm cannon was only standard on the F-4E; when a cannon was required, a external pod was mounted on the centerline store racks
