Treatments for Correcting Functional Deficits in the Knee.

Dealing with pain and swelling is the prerequisite for regaining normal function in the injured joint.

Joint movement limitation may be treated with manual therapy techniques, gentle manipulation and mobilizing techniques. Any forceful pain causing manoeuvres are avoided because they are likely to increase pain, swelling and inhibition in the joint. The practitioner may increase joint mobility by bending and straightening the knee gently and rhythmically through its available range, or by holding it bend or straight at its limit to stretch the muscles passively. In most cases of joint limitation the practitioner has to mobilize the knee’s accessory movements by holding the joint bent to 90 tibiofibular joint has to be freed by gentle manipulation of the head of the fibula against the shin bone.

Weakened or inhibited muscles can be helped with electrical muscle stimulation or facilitation techniques, which are movements guided by the therapist. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation is the traditional technique for reviving co-ordination through patters of movement performed by the patient against the manual resistance provided by the therapist. Neuromuscular energizing therapy is a modern system of facilitation. With NET, the therapist uses very light manual guidance through patterns of movement to revive co-ordination of muscle groups and stimulate the patients nervous system and stimulate the patients nervous system and internal energy to appropriate levels for nomal activity.

Feedback and guidance are important for teaching you correct movements, so that you can then benefit from the accurate remedial exercises which are the core of the self help recovery programme.
