Newcastle Kualifikohet
Feyenoord 2 Newcastle 3
Never mind glory in Zagreb, this was fantasy in Feyenoord as we pulled off the greatest act of escapology the Champions League has ever known. Never before has a team lost their first three group games and still qualified. Trust us to be the first...
Things could not have been better when the fit-again Craig Bellamy gave us the lead ten seconds before the end of first half injury time. At that point Kiev (who we needed not to win) were being held by Juventus.
When Hugo Viana fired in a glorious second, four minutes into the second half our dream looked like coming true but then in the Ukraine, Kiev took the lead, meaning our efforts in the de Kuip would only secure a UEFA Cup spot.
But dramatically Juve equalised through Sala and it was suddenly game on again. But when substitute Bombarda got one back for Feyenoord, the nerves began to jangle. Meanwhile in Kiev, Juventus had sensationally taken the lead which meant it was vital that we hung on to our one goal lead.
Typically, a few minutes later and it was 2-2, Kieron Dyer and the linesman were the villains as Dyer gave the ball away cheaply and the linesman missed an offside but Lurling (who could have had at least six yellow cards) thumped in the equaliser.
With minutes to go, we had the prospect of Champions League, the UEFA Cup or absolutely nowt depending on who got the winner. With us looking punch drunk and on the ropes suddenly Dyer slipped through into the box with just keeper Patrick Lodewijks to beat from ten yards. His placed shot wasn't strong enough to Lodewijks but Bellamy was lurking and from a tight angle squeezed his shot in off the keeper as we entered three minutes of injury time.
The last moments were something of a blur but we managed to cling on and in the Ukraine, Kiev were unable to overturn their deficit, resulting in possibly the most remarkable night in our club's ludicrous history.
