Electroconvulsive Therapy For Depression (ECT)

Electroconvulsive Therapy For Depression (ECT)

Sometimes referred to as “shock therapy” labors under the under served curse of a terrible name and a terrible reputation. Don’t let this fool you. Electroconvulsive Therapy is a terrifically safe considering the great benefits that can often be gain. Electroconvulsive Therapy is especially useful for psychotic mood disorders, people who really need a fast response, medication non responders, and for those who cannot tolerate antidepressant medication. Electroconvulsive Therapy has a higher response rate 80 to 90 percent versus the 65- to 70 percent achieved by medication combinations and also works more rapidly.

However, it has the disadvantage of providing fewer clues as to what type of medication is likely to work to prevent recurrences in the maintenance phase. Due to misguided fears, Electroconvulsive Therapy has been typically considered treatment of last resort when nothing else works. It probably deserves to be used earlier and more often. Unfortunately, few can forget the horrifying scene in the film One Fle Over the Cuckoo’s Nest when the Jack Nicholson character, R.P McMurphy, is administered Electroconvulsive Therapy without anesthesia, seemingly more as a punishment than as therapy. Cusckoo’s Nest was a great movie but a terribly unrealistic depiction of mental illness and of Electroconvulsive Therapy
