There always comes a day in life when you ask yourself the question: is this really what I want? Whether you’re leaving school, trying new opportunities while on the current job or facing unemployment, this happens… but it doesn’t mean the end of the world.
“Business opportunities are like busses, there’s always another one coming”, said Richard Branson, and many agree. Jobs/careers/decisions have and will have the same approach… you might miss some good buses, but eventually you’ll jump on the right one. Or continue jumping from one bus to another one, while living the adventure life you always wanted. It also happens that you are pushed towards the next bus coming right your way, but it’s always in your hands to decide. There is no right or wrong in a career path, and there is no “how to”.George Bernard, said: “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself”, so based on my market experience so far it’s really important to focus on the things that you love to do and that can lead you to adaption, which in real-life situations is important. Since I was a kid I had this dream of becoming an architect; an important career to follow and from which I could earn a lot of money… fast forward a couple of years later I had a construction engineer diploma in my pocket. Close enough! I didn’t get accepted where I wanted… I adapted.
While studying, I started working part-time as a journalist a local newspaper covering news from the tech industry… surprise, surprise; I always had a passion for technology, since I had the first contact with a computer, sometime in 1994… but wait there’s more. Thanks to my Father and Mother, both professors of Albanian Language and more than 30+ years of media experience, I had this natural skill for writing. And people have asked… and the answer is: yes it runs in the family. Some things you never think about, but they just come towards you… get on that bus. Adapt.
While this job created the financing column for my studies, I also developed some quite interesting skills, which amongst are:
When this bus comes your way, in the beginning you won’t understand it, since you’ve been advised so many times that only through education you can get a job and a great career path, but all of a sudden you get the chance to know that you can create something, create your own job. While constantly adapting you find out that the career path from the younger days is something different compared to the new one that you are seeing and it’s set through the decisions you make, not the footsteps that you should follow.
Don’t worry about learning many things from different industries – It makes you a generalist, which will put you on some amazing opportunities in life, but also remember to have an ace up your sleeve. You can do quite some amazing surprises out there.
My advice so far: be that crazy one that believes in changing the world and do it. Create your steps and your opportunities.
p.s. my story continues…!

While this job created the financing column for my studies, I also developed some quite interesting skills, which amongst are:
- As a journalist you can improve a lot of content related things within a company.
- You get the ability to deliver on deadlines and become a multitasking machine (photography, editing, writing, design, etc). And yeah, journalists are hell of experts on using the web.
- Become a critical thinker and get fast answers.
- Work ethic. This is a critical skill set that is missing a lot in the market where I’m currently stationed, and you know what, while being a journalist (which still am – you can never quit), you become this sort of person that follows stories. You sketch story while sleeping, talking to your girlfriend or hanging out with friends.
