The Central European University (CEU) has announced its Summer University
(SUN) program for 2004.
The SUN is an academic program for young faculty,
researchers and professionals, postdocs and advanced doctoral students. It
offers a series of intensive two and three-week long high-level, research
based courses in the social sciences and humanities.
The program utilizes CEU's recognized regional expertise and wider network,
involving internationally acclaimed faculty worldwide, creating a space for
mutually enriching dialogue between our regional and western scholarship.
The teaching teams' joint expertise is shared with participants in a
comparative framework during the summer courses.

Participate in this new summer institute in the heart of Amsterdam, which offers a unique integration of theory and practice. For development and relief workers, academics, and MA and PhD students. Conflict is ubiquitous, and it frustrates our best intentions and initiatives. For the professional who brings passion and purpose to his/her work, a high level of competence in conflict management is likely to make the difference between disillusionment and fulfillment. For the professional's organization, it will make a crucial difference in organizational performance. This Summer Institute is designed to enable current and future professionals to be more effective in dealing with the conflicts with which they are confronted every day - conflict with the external environment and conflict within their own organizations. The primary focus will be on the challenges of being part of an organization attempting to deliver services in high-conflict situations, e.g. humanitarian relief efforts and post-conflict economic development programmes. To accomplish this goal, the course will be a stimulating integration of theory and practice, bringing the highest level of academic breadth and depth together with practical, hands-on training and personal development. This is critical, because effective, real-world conflict management is both reflective, requiring analysis and strategic planning, and immediate, requiring well-honed skills to cope with conflict's inevitable stresses and provocations. This course therefore has three strongly interrelated objectives: an understanding of theory and conceptual frameworks, the development of competencies and skill, and the attainment of the self-awareness that makes possible the utilization of the first two in "real time" - when it counts!

In order to achieve a balance between students and professionals and to achieve cultural and geographic diversity, the Summer Institute on Conflict Management and Resolution welcomes participation by:
Graduate students from all over the world;

The Byron Hanke Fellowship - For Graduate Research on Community Associations
The Community Associations Institute Research Foundation (CAIRF) is proud to announce an annual Fellowship, available to graduate students working on topics related to community associations. Community associations govern common-interest communities of any kind -- condominiums, cooperatives, townhouse developments, planned unit developments and other developments where homeowners support an association with mandatory financial assessments, and are subject to use and aesthetic restrictions. The Research Foundation Executive Committee maintains the right to determine the amount of the stipend. Fellows are expected to prepare a research project on community associations.
Areas and Topics of Study
In the past, the CAIRF has recognized outstanding achievement in the academic study of community associations through the annual CAI Research Foundation Award of Excellence. Papers submitted for this prestigious award have come from a wide range of academic disciplines, including law, economics, sociology and urban planning. All of these disciplines are appropriate areas of graduate studies for a Hanke Fellowship, along with any others which the Research Foundation may be persuaded are relevant to community associations. Within the field of community associations and common interest communities, Hanke Fellowship projects may address management, institutions, organization and administration, public policy, architecture, as well as political, economic, social, and intellectual trends in community association housing. Projects may focus on either applied or theoretical research. The Research Foundation is especially interested in substantive papers from the social sciences, which place community association housing within political or economic organizational models. In all cases, the topic must have the approval of the graduate student's general academic advisor, or of another full-time faculty member, who will supervise the Hanke Fellow's Project. The project topic must have potential of furthering understanding of residential community associations.
Application
As part of the Hanke Fellowship's application, the student must commit to research and to write a substantial paper dealing with community associations or common-interest communities. The paper shall be on a scale appropriate for a master's thesis, doctoral dissertation, or a law review quality article.
Application for a Hanke Fellowship consists of a letter to the Chair of the Community Associations Institute Research Foundation. The application should:
- Set forth the applicant's qualifications;
- Describe in some detail the applicant's proposed research project on community associations;
- Include three letters of recommendation in support of the candidate;
- Include a brief writing sample (approximately 5 to 20 pages).
- Some finalists may be asked to provide official transcripts.
There is no deadline for applying for a fellowship.

The American Council of Learned Societies
( http://www.acls.org/ ) is accepting applications from
individuals and institutions for East European Language
Training programs.
Individuals may apply for a grant of up to $2,500 for a
summer course of study in Albanian, Bosnian-Croatian-
Serbian, Bulgarian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian,
Lithuanian, Macedonian, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, or
Slovene. Applicants may request support for beginning,
intermediate, or advanced language study at institutions
of higher education in the U.S., or, in exceptional cases,
for courses at the advanced level in Eastern Europe.
Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the
U.S. and have completed, at a minimum, a four-year college
degree. Applications should state the name of the

teaching. Approximately twelve grants will be available.

Human security and development have emerged to become foremost concerns of the 21st Century. Countless tragedies reveal how vulnerable societies are to human suffering and devastation. They also indicate how inexorably linked state security is to individual security, and how threats and challenges of insecurity, whatever their form and wherever their origin, can almost effortlessly erode the well being of individuals elsewhere. Responses to human security threats and developmental challenges require commitment and concerted action from a wide range of societal groups. Whether the issue is ensuring public safety, providing health care, preventing conflict, or rebuilding collapsed states, it is widely recognized that partnerships are instrumental, not only among actors affected by threats, but also with actors providing assistance to cope with such threats. Human security and development are thus highly inclusive concepts that require actors at multiple levels of society to work together. But as challenges become more complex and new actors attempt to play a contributing role, it is also necessary to ensure that individuals are empowered to take action on their own behalf and become full participants in decision-making processes.
Objectives
Building Partnerships for Human Security and Development is an intensive, three-week professional training course designed to address a range of human security and development related phenomena, their inter-relationships and the dynamics of building innovative and viable partnerships.
Specifically, the course aims to:
Enhance knowledge and understanding of human security and development, including the complex linkages that surface among their many dimensions; Increase awareness of broad-based partnerships and develop as well as refine key skills and know-how to improve their design and management; Identify good practices and lessons from partnership initiatives;
and Provide an enabling environment for participants to network and lay the foundations for designing new, or strengthening existing, partnerships.
The course will cover a range of human security and development topics, including threats to peace and security, and a number of economic, social, environmental, human rights and humanitarian issues. A key aspect of the course is its functional character, which places emphasis on partnerships and encourages participants to explore this theme through a number of specific human security and development challenges.
The course will privilege practice-oriented training to enable participants to acquire a broad-based understanding of the topic through concept-learning (lectures), role-playing (interactive exercises), experience-sharing (participant presentations) and real world exposure (briefings).
Candidates should be in the 30-45 years age range.
The course will take place from 14 June to 2 July 2004 at the Palais des Nations, the headquarters of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
A limited number of fellowships are available for participants from developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis and cover course fees, training material, accommodation and a local living stipend. UNITAR also issues tuition waivers for candidates from developing and transition economy countries. For all participants, travel expenses to and from Geneva must be covered individually or by the sponsoring organization. Applications will be reviewed and candidates selected on the basis of their merits and the potential benefit they may gain from their participation in the course. Equitable geographical distribution and gender balance will be ensured. The course will be conducted in English.
Participants will receive a certificate based on their regular attendance, active participation and submission of a short paper prior to the beginning of the course. Participants will be required to revise the paper during the course and make a presentation at the end of the programme.
