Re: Summer Schools

The sixth annual Olympia Summer Seminars will be held from July 1 to
July 15, 2007 in Ancient Olympia, Greece. The seminars aim to
facilitate an interdisciplinary and comparative approach to the study
of current politics and historical events by bringing together eminent
scholars and highly qualified students and professionals from around
the world. Set against the backdrop of the birthplace of the Olympic
Games and the beautiful and historically-rich Peloponnesian region of
Greece, the Olympia seminars provide a unique opportunity for critical
thinking and intellectual interaction in a relaxed environment.

THE PROGRAMS

War, Conflict & Identity
Organized in collaboration with Yale University's Program on Order,
Conflict, and Violence

Seminar Dates: July 1 - July 15, 2007

The course provides a concise, yet in-depth, overview of new
theoretical and empirical research on a range of topics at the
intersection of war, conflict, and identity, including interstate and
civil war, terrorism, riots and genocide, and the dynamics of
conflict. The course addresses questions such as the following: What
is the relation between conflict and violence? What explains the
changing patterns and forms of violent conflict? How do identities
impact on violence, and vice-versa? Is civil war on the rise? What
accounts for the major decline of interstate war? Is mass violence
becoming more or les common? What is terrorism and how is it linked
to these developments? How does conflict interact with state collapse
and state building? The goal is to survey cutting edge research and
identify emerging research agendas.

Using methods and models from a number of relevant disciplines
-political science, political economy, sociology, history and

media and media policy issues of particular concern to future European
Union member states. The seminar will devote special attention to the
implications of accession on the regulation of domestic media, as well
as to the wider effects of European integration for the media systems
of the EU and its member states. The seminar program will address the
effects of technology on the business model and the dilemma of news;
electoral campaigning and media coverage of elections; the challenges
that arise from managing small media businesses in small markets; and
the effects of media freedom and public opinion on democracy. The

The European Union Enlargement in South-Eastern Europe : Security and Political-Economic Dimensions
Organised by the ECPR Standing Group on International Relations
Date: 2 - 14 July
Location: Ljubljana
Target Groups: PhD students in advanced stages of their PhD project, dealing with the security and/or political-economic dimensions of the European Union enlargement in South-Eastern Europe.
Objectives: The possibilities, hopes and realities of the processes of European Union's (EU) Enlargement in South-eastern Europe pose many complex security and political-economic questions. One of the biggest is the starting point we take for the exploration: either from EU and its member-states in South Eastern Europe , but also from those states that will remain out of the EU as well as from the broader regional and global perspectives. In any case international, national and human security and political-economic (both in comprehensive understandings) concerns seem to be as important as they were at the beginning of the EU project despite changed in the historical context. We propose to explore those themes methodologically, theoretically and empirically at the macro, middle and micro level of research with interested advanced PhD students. We are interested in the contribution of advanced PhD students to the following issues:

Studying Security and Political Economy in EU Enlargements: Incorporating the Understandings of the Balkans

EU Enlargement in the Balkans within International Security and Political Economy: Conflict-management, Peace- or Market-making?

EU Enlargement and the Political-Economic Security in the Balkans

EU Enlargement and the Human Security and Development in the Balkans

Courses:

Meta-theoretical Assumptions in Studying Security and Political Economy of EU Enlargements

Theorizing the Security and Political Economy of EU Enlargements: Incorporating the Understandings of the Balkans

Re: Summer Schools Around Europe

The Summer School for Young Professionals 2007– Introduction into Security Policy, with the topic GLOBAL SECURITY CHALLENGES OF TODAY as the main theme, takes place on 30 June – 8 July 2007 at the National Academy of Defence (NAD) in Liptovský Mikuláš, Slovakia. It is a weeklong forum that is focused on the current issues of the security policy - the structure of the teaching is aimed to provide the students with the basics of the security policy background, including main actors of the security policy in Europe, main security threats of today such as terrorism, proliferation of WMD, illegal migration and those regions of the world that are posing risks to the global security.

One of the main objectives of this international summer school is the preparation of young professionals – future leaders from below mentioned regions – to act in the foreign and security policy. Interactive discussions and lectures led by top speakers from various international and Slovak organizations will therefore focus on open exchange of ideas and interaction of participants from different backgrounds. There will be many side activities besides the classroom lectures and discussions – dynamic workshops, trip to nearby Tatra mountains and Liptovsky Mikulas and others. Summer school will finish with the simulation of UN Security Council crisis meeting, in which the participants will play the roles of international diplomats.

Summer school is intended for master and doctoral level students of political science and/or international relations who are interested in the foreign and security policy issues. Around 35 students will be from Central Europe, South Eastern Europe and Ukraine .

The teaching language of the summer school will be English. At the end of the school, students will receive certificate of course attendance issued by the NAD.

This is the second year that Centre for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENAA), together with its partner NAD, is organizing this summer school in Slovakia, with the financial support given by NATO PDD, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and in cooperation with the Lower Silesian Centre of Strategy Studies, the International Institute of Political Science of Masaryk University (IIPS) and the Szeged Centre for Security Policy.

Our aim for the future is to make the Summer school for young professionals as international as possible, which we intend to achieve with the help of university departments like yours. We would therefore like to develop a relationship with your school to extend the experience to your students.

As a first step in working with your institution, I would very much appreciate if you would be so kind as to forward the attached letter, preliminary programme and application form and to any students who you think might be interested in attending. Also, attached you will find our poster – please feel free to print some and to display it where the students can see it. We are going to distribute the posters as well in printed version. If you are interested in receiving them, please specify the number of posters you could use to promote this event to your students.

All relevant information about our organization, “Summer School for Young Professionals 2006” and our other activities can be found at our website www.cenaa.org.

I would like to kindly ask you if you would reply to this email confirming your mailing address and contact information. We would greatly appreciate your assistance in helping us spread the word about the Summer school for young professionals in order to ensure that this international summer school is a continued academic success and provide future leaders with an invaluable experience.

We look forward to a fruitful future cooperation.

European College of Liberal Arts, Germany

The European College of Liberal Arts (ECLA) in Berlin announces its eighth International Summer University: “The Mantle of the Prophet: Demons, Saints and Terrorists” which takes place from July 13th to August 24th 2007.

The key text is Dostoyevsky’s Demons, and the keynote theme derives from the oft-repeated reference to Dostoyevsky as “prophet.” During the six-week course, Demons becomes a central text around which to explore major moral, religious and political issues. These include the historical and intellectual roots of terrorism, its embodiments from state terror to individual violence, and its expression of nihilist and existential questions. In addressing these issues, students and faculty will augment their discussions through the reading of a variety of complementary philosophical, literary and historical texts as well as the study of visual art in the classroom and in Berlin through the special Explore Berlin component.

The classroom component of the curriculum is complemented by a mid-term weekend excursion to one other German city selected for its cultural richness, as well as walking tours and field trips to galleries and museums in and around Berlin.

Hallmarks of the programme are: small seminar groups, weekly essays, individual attention in one-to-one tutorials, and a close-knit international community of students and faculty that resides on campus. Students receive six credits in Interdisciplinary Studies.

A comprehensive programme fee of 4500 Euros covers tuition, campus accommodation, full board, books on loan, reading materials, class excursions, emergency medical insurance, museum and transportation passes.

International Summer University

The 2009 Theme: Montaigne and the Making of the Modern Self
http://www.ecla. de/index. php?id=112

The International Summer University, ECLA's first programme, has existed since 2000. Each year it has been developed with a new or revised curriculum. The theme for the 2009 ISU is “Montaigne and the Making of the Modern Self”. Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) was one of the most noted and influential writers of the French Renaissance. In his famous work, Essays, Montaigne invents the essay as a modern form of individual self-reflection. During the six week programme, students and faculty will explore how a new image of the modern self emerges from Montaigne’s Essays and investigate the impact of Montaigne's moral, religious, cultural and political ideals on our understanding of the modern self. Each week, readings and discussion will be organized around a general topic related to Montaigne's Essays, including the birth of the modern self in Renaissance Europe, the discovery of the New World and its consequences for the self-understanding of European cultures, Montaigne’s criticism of human presumption and pride as root causes of the Wars of Religion in 16th century France, the relation between morality and politics in modern statecraft, and the place of pleasure, friendship and sexuality as well as death in the care of the self. Along with Montaigne’s Essays, students will study a variety of philosophical, literary, and historical texts, including Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Machiavelli’s The Prince, Nietzsche’s On the Genealogy of Morals, and Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground. Films and museum visits will complement the readings.

The six-week long Summer University begins on July 6th 2008 and ends on August 14th 2009.

Deadline for applications: April 15th 2008 (date of arrival at ECLA)
