My country, Kosovo recognized until now by 85 countries of the world, is having a hard time being recognized on the online counterpart. While some say there’s a political reason for that, this is not the case. If there still is Yugoslavia in some top web sites, why is it so hard to update the list and have Kosovo? Why citizens of an independent country have to choose another country when they try to register somewhere online? Why when I tweet, my location has to say near Russia, when in fact I’m not even close to Russia?
While we’re here taking about Twitter, the biggest news on the web today is that Twitter has finally recognized the tweets coming from our country, so in fact that means that if you tweet and include your location, it doesn’t say near Russia anymore.
A week or so ago, the biggest service on the world for creating and sharing events – Eventbrite, after some polite requests from the Twitter users coming from Kosovo to have the country on the list – recognized Kosovo, and now people now that our events are in Kosovo not in another neighboring country or Russia.
#onlineambassadors
These kinds of people or what I love to call them #Online Ambassadors are a necessary need for a young country like Kosovo. They take care of the country on the internet world, which nowadays is more important than many things and besides the SOPA that is trying to make it feel like 1984, I believe that we all have a mission to stick to: Represent our country the rightful way and take care of it, as we are doing.
Whether they are in Kosovo (follow @gentthaci), working from Kosovo for an international company (follow @milot), living outside of Kosovo and working all over the world (follow @xhakli)… they are kickass ambassadors, that every country would love to have.
