The most common cancer in woman and the second most common cause of cancer death in woman is breast cancer. As the majority of breast cancer is diagnosed from an abnormality in the mammogram, a change in the breast tissue is also a warning of tumor. The rise in awareness of breast cancer in the past years has led to a bigger number of woman undergoing mammography, leading to detection of breast cancer in its earliest stages and an improvement in survival rates. However, breast cancer is still the main cause of death in woman, and 1% in man.
Research has shown that genetic or hormonal factors are the primary risk factors for breast cancer. New systems have been developed that enable doctors to characterize the expansion of cancer and decide about the medical treatments. The medical treatment depends on the type of cancer and its extent. Treatments involve surgery, which is the removal of the cancer alone or the mastectomy, hormonal therapy, radiation and chemotherapy.

When breast cancer cells spread, they are usually found in the lymph near the breast. However, breast cancer can also spread to many other parts of the body. The most common are the liver, brain, bones and lungs.

The new tumor that is formed in the new part has the same name ans the primary tumor. For example, if breast cancer cells spread to the brain , the cancer cells formed in the brain are breast cancer cells. The disease is than called metastatic breast cancer, not any other cancer.
